Meet Gareth
Gareth is the founder of Tangent Initiative — a project born from a mix of curiosity, care, and a lifetime of taking the scenic route. After a decade in teaching and a background in pastoral care, leadership, and student wellbeing, Gareth saw the need for something a little different. Something more human. Tangent Initiative is his way of bringing people together, starting real conversations, and creating space for growth (without all the fluff). He’s the kind of person who’ll ask a big question over coffee, chase down a bold idea, and genuinely wants to see people thrive — even if that means going off track for a while.
My Story
After 10 years as a teacher — working with all kinds of young people, communities, and families — I’ve decided to take a bit of a detour into the world of wellbeing. I’m passionate about helping people feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow (in their own way, at their own pace).
I have ADHD, which means my brain is always buzzing with ideas, connections, and curiosity. I lean into that energy to create spaces and experiences that are real, creative, and a little bit unexpected — just like life.
Originally from a sheep farm in New Zealand, I’ve found a second home in Melbourne, where I’m continuing to explore what it means to live a full, connected, meaningful life — and hopefully help others do the same.
Tangent Initiative is all about the magic that happens when you follow the side roads. So here I am, taking one. Let’s see where it leads.
